Attending a live performance of The
Nutcracker has become a happy holiday tradition for thousands
of Floridians. But the George Balanchine ballet also provides
an essential economic boost for the company that stages it. New
Florida goes
behind the scenes at the Miami City Ballet to learn how sugar
plum fairies and dancing snowflakes impact the company’s
bottom line.
Up north, signs of Christmas abound – from
smoking chimneys to scarf-clad snowmen. But here in Florida,
sunshine and palm trees can make it more difficult to detect
the holiday’s approach. Luckily, there is a clear symbol
that Christmas is upon us in Delray
Beach: a 100-foot tall metal-and-faux-foliage Christmas "tree." It
may not be the real thing, but as New Florida found
out, it’s enough to get the tree’s half-million
visitors in the holiday spirit.
Hanukah may
commemorate a solemn occasion, but the 8-day long Jewish
holiday is celebrated with a youthful zeal by toddlers and
elderly alike. How do we know? Because New
Florida was invited to join the Hanukah festivities
at two very different Palm Beach County locations – the Joseph
L. Morse Geriatric Center and the Edward and Thelma Glanz
Early Childhood Center.
For children, a model train toot-tooting
down a miniature track may seem the perfect plaything to
request from Santa. But for one Florida firm, these tiny
trains are big business. New
Florida travels
to Miami Beach to visit SMARTT,
one of the nation’s largest model railroad construction
firms.
Christmas
with the Clots is a high-energy affair. Literally. With
a lavish lawn display comprised of over 600,000 lights and
100 animated figures, the Pinecrest, Florida family spends
a small fortune each Christmas to power their high-watt spectacle. New
Florida joins the thousands
of holiday visitors eager to see one of the largest single-family
light displays in the country.
