Harbor Pilots
Sure, piloting a huge cruise ship or tanker through open water takes skill, but even the savviest crew will need help navigating a massive vessel in and out of a busy port. New Florida meets a Port Canaveral Harbor Pilot who uses his exhaustive knowledge of shifting sand bars, delicate reefs and ever-changing weather patterns to bring cruise ships, tankers and even Trident submarines into port safely.

The Florida Store
In many ways, the history of Burdines mirrors the history of Miami. As the city grew from a pioneer outpost to a worldwide tourist Mecca, Burdines grew from a simple dry goods store to a chain of hugely successful multi-story department stores. But earlier this year, the history of the store and the city finally diverged when “the Florida store” was renamed Macy’s. New Florida commemorates the passing of this Florida institution.

Villages of Coral Gables
Think of a “typical” Florida home and a one-story concrete block building with an attached carport may come to mind. But in the Villages of Coral Gables, none of the homes fit this description. That’s because developer George Merrick set out in the 1920’s to create a series of unique neighborhoods, each of which would showcase architecture from a different part of the world.

New Florida’s own Hunter Reno takes a bicycle tour of this rather odd – and oddly appealing – part of Miami-Dade County.

Golf Course Design
Florida is home to more than 900 golf courses – some of the most beautiful and challenging links in the country. But what makes one set of 18 holes more beautiful or more challenging than any other?

New Florida links up with golf course architect Gene Bates to learn what it takes to create a golfer’s paradise.
