Gazer, the five-minute "do-it-yourself" guide to the wonders
of the universe airs on WPBT Channel 2 periodically each week.
Jack Horkheimer, Executive Director of the Miami Space Transit
Planetarium, makes comets, conjunctions and constellations
accessible to the average viewer. From the avid astronomer
to the curious novice, anyone can understand astronomical
science with Horkheimer's lively and witty translation of
sophisticated disciplines into popular language. With the
sky as his beat, Horkheimer reports on the latest discoveries
and hottest topics in astronomy and space science as well
as the lore, the lure, the mystique and the mythology of the
heavenly bodies.
Horkheimer
creates a new show each week, guiding viewers through the
scientific and historical significance of astronomical phenomena
that appears in the ever-changing night sky. One week it might
be an alignment of Mars, Venus and Aldebaran, another week
possibly the Perseid meteor shower or the next week perhaps
the moons of Jupiter. Horkheimer shows viewers exactly how
to view the phenomena for themselves. He explains what time
to be outside and where to look. Almost all of the astronomical
wonders he features can be viewed with the naked eye.
For over
20 years, Horkheimer has been popularizing astronomy and space
science. His humorous style and informal delivery sits atop
a solid background of astronomy and space science. He is a
former science columnist and a founding member and past journal
editor of the International Planetarium Society. Star Gazer
airs on more than 100 public television stations nationwide.
